Sir John Charnley
One of the greatest surgical
advances of the twentieth century has been the development of the
hip replacement operation. The pioneer and innovator in the field
was Sir John Charnley, an English orthopedic surgeon.
He invented the low friction
hip replacement in the early 1960s at the Center for Hip Surgery
at Wrightington, England. Surgeons from all over the world made their
way to Wrightington to learn his techniques.
